Our obsession with improving soil quality is a great way to extend the life of your favorite trees. By focusing on soil texture and structure, we can help your soil to increase microbial biodiversity, reduce compaction, and absorb more water for a longer period of time. You will likely hear us refer to "trying to recreate a forest" when discussing soils.

Adding organic material to your soil is so important to ensure nutrients are reintroduced and readily available for your trees. These materials minimize compaction and ensure larger pores are available for water penetration and retention.

Liquid soil amendments are a great addition for areas that cannot be mulched or need quicker activity than compost can provide. This is usually recommended for Xeriscaped areas or trees with significant competition like grass and small shrubs in the same area.

In extreme situations, we may recommend the use of an AirSpade to assist in decompacting the soil, introducing more organic matter into the soil, and removing excess material from the base of the tree.

Fertilizer should be used sparingly, and only if a soil test determines there is a missing nutrient from your soil. Soil amendments such as mulch, compost, liquid seaweed, molasses, or humic acids provide nutrients, but focus more on the structure and health of the soil versus introducing a specific macronutrient into the soil.
Soil compaction is almost guaranteed in Austin Texas. We have a clay-heavy dense soil that can compact just from not being watered often (think how much of a drought we are in). The easiest way to tell if there is soil compaction is to grab a screwdriver or similar tool and feel how easily the tool can be driven into the soil. If the soil provides resistance there is a high likelihood that the soil is compacted and oxygen/water will not be able to access the roots.
An arborist will likely tell you to mulch all the way out to the end of the dripline, but we know that is not always feasible. Our team of Certified Arborists will gladly discuss options to achieve your objective while staying within budget and timeframe.
