What are Girdling Roots?

Here in Central Texas, our trees face tough conditions- scorching summers, drought, and the occasional ice storm. But sometimes, the biggest threat comes from within: girdling roots.

What’s a Girdling Root?

Imagine a tree wearing a belt that’s way too tight. That’s essentially what a girdling root is. It’s a root that grows around the base of the trunk, choking the tree and cutting off the flow of water and nutrients.

Why They’re a Problem in Austin

Our tough conditions make trees even more vulnerable to girdling roots.

These roots:

Stress Out Trees: Like a tight belt, they restrict the tree’s ability to “breathe” and get the resources it needs, especially during drought.

Weaken Our Trees: This makes them more likely to topple in strong winds, a common occurrence in Central Texas.

Lead to Slow Decline: You might see stunted growth, yellowing leaves, or even branches dying back. Eventually, the whole tree can die.
